HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection in developed countries. There are several HPV genotypes with genital tropism, and for some of them the oncogenic effect, following persistent infection, has been extensively documented. Instead, other genotypes have a intermediate or low oncogenic risk causing benign and often asymptomatic lesions, such as condylomata. The identification of one or more genotypes responsible of multiple infections is an essential diagnostic and follow-up tool.
