Gastrointestinal disorders can have several aetiological agents. Intestinal infections are mainly caused by viruses and bacteria, which are transmitted through contaminated food and water, or from person to person. The main symptom associated with these diseases is diarrhoea, which in the most severe cases leads to dehydration that can seriously compromise the health of affected elderly people and children. As they are not characterised by specific symptoms, it is often complex to make an accurate diagnosis and proceed with the correct clinical approach. Timely diagnosis and identification of the pathogens responsible for the infection are crucial to intervene and prevent the worsening of symptoms, as well as the transmission of infectious agents.
